![]() The Weather Station – Ignorance FFO: Cate Le Bon, Hand Habits, L’Rain, caroline Yet another book in the storied history of APTBS, and without a doubt a piece of their output that will go down in history for all the right reasons. There’s seemingly a more renewed interest in electronics on this new one, where Pinned saw a bit more of a stripped-back bluesy sound, most of See Through You could easily be mistaken for 90’s industrial titans Nine Inch Nails (who they toured with in the past), rich as it is with machinated grit and screaming syncopated fuzz. We kick things off with the percussive blast of Nice Of You To Be There For Me before Ackermann’s trademark vocal kicks in, proving that none of the fuzzed-out feedback-laden grit has left the building. It’s always an incendiary experience with a new APTBS album, and this is absolutely no different. A Place To Bury Strangers – See Through You FFO: Metz, The KVB, Clinic, Spacemen 3 The whole LP is full of these moments of organic change and seamless transition, it’s a beautifully accomplished and perfectly conceived whole. The kosmische stomp of Drivenhalle for example is imbued with a loose rhythmic foundation accentuated and built upon through the whole of its 9+ minute duration, twisting out of droning Eat Lights Become Lights-y walls of sound and ending up in a flickering redux of folk and post-rock near the end. This wonderful new LP from Phantom Band guitarist and all-around instrumentalist Duncan Marquiss sees him trading the riffs for meticulously constructed atmospheres, wrought from a variety of organic and electric processes and ending up with a superb record, richly evocative and beautifully diverse. Duncan Marquiss – Wires Turned Sideways In Time FFO: Pneumatic Tubes, Modern Nature, Keeley Forsyth, Holodrum It’s both hugely engaging but not at all forceful, and is a perfect fit for one of the greatest labels in the game. It’s as impeccably produced as you’d expect, with every single piece of the puzzle slotting in perfectly, but with several surprises along the way. It’s a beautiful record, with swooning synths and wistful keys working their way around each other, organic swells and brittle string fragments pan around the stereo spectrum giving the sense of waves lapping against the shore. ![]() The Advisory Circle’s Ways Of Seeing was my Number one LP in the staff charts a few years ago and scored really highly on our overall chart too, and Maritime (on one of my favourite labels of all time, Clay Pipe) could possibly topple that in preference pretty quickly. If you like Bodega, you’ll probably enjoy seeing Parquet Courts and OSEES on our stage, as well as FAIR PLAY in NQ! Cafe Kaput – Maritime: Themes And Texture sĬate Brooks has long been one of my favourite artists, in every single iteration of her output. ![]() A hugely immediate and wonderfully satisfying LP, and one that cements Bodega at the forefront of the movement. While there are bands have that done *this sound* since (and obviously) before Bodega, I still think they’re one of the best around. Immediately reminiscent of both The Fall and strangely, the timbre and collaborative shouts of The Beastie Boys, there are pieces of pure pop-punk perfection ( Statuette On The Console) that could easily be taken from a mid-90s skate video segment and a wonderful contrast in the more grooving bass-heavy walls of sound. NY post-punkers Bodega hit us with their newest outing since 2018’s Endless Scroll and it effortlessly continues their dominance of the scene with a heady mix of percussive near-spoken vox and jagged shimmering guitar drive. BODEGA – Broken EquipmentįFO: Snapped Ankles, LIFE, Folly Group, Do Nothing If you need something a *little* fierier, then the Bodega LP should fit the bill nicely, with snappy post-punk riffs and angular guitar lines coming together into a perfect and oft-melodic cacophony of noise… if a *little* isn’t quite enough oomph for you then can I offer you the absolutely earth-shaking industrial noise-grind of A Place To Bury Strangers’ ‘See Through You’? It’s joined by a few new ones including a new LP for the wonderful Clay pipe records from Cate Brooks in her Cafe Kaput moniker, swimming (sorry) with abandoned aquatic ambience and swooning, haunted seaside haze, or the folky psychedelic minimalism of The Weather Station’s ‘Ignorance’. It’s another double-weeker this time, last weeks’ Duncan Marquiss LP is an essential inclusion, with it being a stunningly beautiful piece of work in its own right AND The Phantom Band (from whence Duncan came) being one of Picc’s top bands over the years. Here’s what he’s selected this week, and why: Every week, Barry aka Apta, over at Piccadilly Records chooses his favourite selections from the new releases that have landed on their shelves. ![]() ![]() The kidneys, lungs and brain quickly followed, all starved by blood vessels whose walls were too weak to carry oxygen and nutrients to them.ĭeVries, the surgeon who implanted the device in the Seattle dentist when Clark's real heart failed-it had been transformed by disease into "tissue paper"-told reporters today that both he and Clark considered the experiment a success to the end. Instances in which patients have pushed the envelope despite warnings include in vitro fertilization, stem cell research, enhancement technologies and entry into stage I clinical trials.īut this dynamic is, ultimately, a good one. In the intervening 25 years, this dynamic has often been repeated: the public rejecting the advice of the very bioethics profession that has sought to protect it. “If, in the process of averting death,” wrote William Safire, then a columnist at the New York Times, “a patient chooses to become a human guinea pig or to marry a bulky machine, the patient has the right to demand that the medical profession let him make that choice.” “Who is so hard of heart as not to be profoundly moved by this historic accomplishment?” asked a Tennessee editorial writer. “I lost a brother to heart disease and suffer from a serious heart problem myself,” one man wrote to Una Loy Clark. Far from seeing Clark as a victim, he was lionized as a hero who had knowingly entered uncharted waters for the benefit of science and future patients. The Clark case, they concluded, was “fundamentally unethical” and “profoundly disquieting.”īut the public's response was quite different. Swazey, who documented several irregularities in the process by which the Utah Institutional Review Board had approved the experiment. The most critical ethical analysis was performed by the team of sociologist Renee C. Annas termed the consent formed signed by Clark “incomplete, internally inconsistent, and confusing.” Caplan, then of the Hastings Center, a New York ethics think tank, believed that animal experiments carried out to date had not been conclusive enough to warrant implantation of the heart in a human. Yet while the University of Utah had tried to heed these new concerns, most bioethicists ultimately criticized what happened. Protecting the rights and bodies of research subjects-and patients-was central to bioethics’ mission. Among the major reasons the field had emerged were a series of research scandals, in which patients had unknowingly been entered into harmful studies. The nascent profession of bioethics paid close attention to Clark from the start. But there were good days, too, such as March 7, 1983, when an interactive Clark celebrated his 39th anniversary with his wife and children. It was later revealed that before his death, 112 days after the implantation, Clark had extended periods of confusion and even suicidality. Almost immediately, Clark experienced severe complications, including seizures and a broken heart valve. Although early interest focused on the case’s Frankenstein-like aspects, the public was quickly drawn to the story of an admirable patient, his stoic wife Una Loy and a team of pioneering doctors.īut all was not well. The news that Clark was alert and responsive post-operatively made front-page news around the world. Clark’s story reveals both the triumphs and limitations of the bioethics “revolution.” The Clark case was a proving ground for the new field which, in response to a series of crises, had emerged to forge a new paradigm for making medical decisions. When Clark agreed to become the first recipient of a permanent artificial heart 25 years ago, he was exploring new territory not only in medicine but in bioethics. ![]() DeVries and his team at the University of Utah removed Clark’s heart and replaced it with an aluminum and polyurethane device connected to a 400-pound air compressor that would accompany Clark for the rest of his life. INVERSE is counting down the 20 science discoveries that made us say “WTF” in 2021. If we manage that, then it could help physicists further test fundamental theories of the universe, like relativity and dark matter, by clocking atomic movements with greater precision. Once those standards are in place, it opens the door to new clocks and more innovation - and a new definition of the second. The point of this study wasn’t so much to pick out a new and improved atomic clock, but rather further refine how these elements’ time-keeping accuracy was compared. What’s next - Atomic clocks are incredibly accurate, but the technology they use is also old by today’s standards. The researchers’ work could also, one day, entirely redefine what we think “a second” actually means. “The authors’ demonstration that high accuracy clocks can be connected by free-space links, without needing an optical-fiber infrastructure, is exciting because it opens up possibilities for applications outside the laboratory, such as land surveying.” She told Inverse the use of free-space links to connect clocks could prove a game-changer for people far beyond the study of physics: Why it matters - Back in March, we talked to Rachel Godun, a senior research scientist in the Time and Frequency group at the National Physical Laboratory in the U.K. Ultimately, this is the most accurate measurement made to date of the ratios between these clocks - and offers a new foundation for innovating atomic clocks as a whole. They found the free-space link no different in terms of certainty than the fiber-optic cables. Then, the researchers spent months sending data points back and forth between the clocks using a little more than two miles worth of fiber optic cabling or shooting data in the form of laser pulses across a free-space link between the labs (literally an optical light signal traveling freely across a distance). The strontium clock was placed about a mile away in a different lab. The aluminum-ion and ytterbium clocks were kept in a lab in Boulder, Colorado. Townes at Columbia University shows one of the first atomic clocks. How they did it - The team devised three atomic clocks that used other elements:Ĭharles H. They published their findings in the journal Nature in March. Together, the results suggest the new methodology could provide 18-digit accuracy to the measure of the difference between atoms. Could they improve the accuracy of this measure?.And, how did the different data methods alter the tiny differences between the time kept by atoms?.Could they use different elements to tell the time?.What’s new - In a study earlier this year, researchers laid the groundwork to do exactly that: A research team based in Colorado decided to try to improve on atomic clocks’ design by testing whether transmitting data via a length of fiber-optic cable or via lasers. In other words, increasing the degree of accuracy here may mean redefining the second itself. Such knowledge matters - if you are able to better account for the errors, then you can more accurately gauge the exact period of a second using an atomic clock. There is a tiny degree of inaccuracy here, however: There are minuscule differences in the time kept by the atoms, and attempts to quantify these differences had an accuracy of up to 17 digits. In other words, in a single second, a cesium-133 atom transitions some 9,192,631,770 times. “The duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the cesium-133 atom.” Since 1967, the formal definition of a second has been: The cesium-133 oscillates between two states and emits a pulse, over and over. In this case, microwave energy interacts with atoms belonging to a form of cesium called cesium-133. ![]() ![]() They are the most accurate clock we have to measure time in seconds.Ī common kind of atomic clock uses a form of cesium called cesium-133. Atomic clocks use these frequencies - specifically, absorbing and emitting photons at regular intervals to keep time. If you recall high school science classes, you might recall putting magnesium in a flame and it then emitting a very bright light - this is essentially a frequency. What is an atomic clock?Ītoms exist at different frequencies. But there is no such thing as perfect, it seems - because this year scientists made the most accurate clocks even more accurate. We’re here to break it to you though: These timepieces are grossly inaccurate compared to the most accurate clocks in the world.
